2007 Team Ortho Membership Now Open

We are launching an online membership drive to give more people an opportunity to join and support Team Ortho: The rapidly growing charity that promotes a healthy lifestyle for Every Body.

Why become a member?

1. To lead a healthy life. It is a fact that physical activity reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, childhood obesity, arthritis, bone and joint disease and other life threatening diseases. To lower these risks and keep you active, you can join a group of more than 4000 people from 30 countries who have participated in a Team Ortho event - such as the Monster Dash 5K run/walk, which will be held in four separate locations this October. You can meet other team members who will support and encourage you in your efforts to improve your life through participation in a road race, bike race, or a triathlon. You can train with one of Team Ortho’s training groups - now located in Minnesota, Oregon, Wisconsin and Virginia. And it doesn’t matter where you start -- Team Ortho truly welcomes Every Body.

2. Get Great Gear. When you sign up for Team Ortho you will receive a gift pack in July just for joining: socks, a visor, and either a jacket or backpack. Additionally, you will be eligible to receive discounts on other brand-name Team Ortho clothing, HED cycling products, and run/walk gear at Marathon Sports Run/Walk.

3. To give back. In 2006, with the support our members, sponsors, donors, and races, Team Ortho Foundation donated $18,000 to support bone, joint, spine and infection research at three orthopedic research organizations: The Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation, the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation, and the Orthopedic Trauma Association Research Fund. Team Ortho also provides grants for amputee kids and adults to participate in Team Ortho events.

TEAM ORTHO MEMBERS

  • Santiago Jim Morgan
Santiago Jim Morgan at the Apple Duathlon, June 2004.

Santiago, who works as a Spanish interpreter at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in Minneapolis, joined Team Ortho in January 2004. He immediately became one of the most active team members, participating in many team training rides and runs. He competed in the Apple Duathlon in June 2004. He says:

I watched the Life Time Fitness Triathlon last year and I saw what a huge presence Team Ortho had. Everywhere you looked there was a Team Ortho member participating or volunteering. I wanted to be part of the team and was interested in the seminars and training sessions."

Santiago's training helped him win first place in his age group in the 2004 triathlon olympic course. He also won an award for Most Dedicated Team Ortho Member.

  • Anne Marie Seward
Anne Marie in the transition area at the 2004 triathlon.

    I don't believe in the words "I can't".

In 1980, Anne Marie Seward was hospitalized for 77 days after a serious car accident. Her right foot was crushed and required a below-knee amputation. Her soon-to-be husband joined a running club and after her recovery, Anne Marie began volunteering at races.

The thought of doing a marathon was unimaginable. But she joined the running club, first competing in two-mile and then 10k races. In 1996, Anne Marie became the fourth woman in the United States to run a marathon as an amputee.

Living longer means we need to take care of our bodies and be active. My three boys are all active - I did not want to raise couch potatoes.

Anne Marie appreciates the camaraderie and support of Team Ortho. She says of the 2003 triathlon: Even little kids were yelling "Go Team Ortho!" as I ran by. It was wonderful having people cheering us on...with the shared goal of raising money and participating in the event together.

In 2004, Anne Marie ran for the Team Ortho Ampuletes, believed to be the first all-amputee triathlon relay team. Her teammates were swimmer Dean Larson and biker Dan Olson. She looks forward to the 2005 triathlon, when the goal is to recruit several relay teams of amputees to compete in the Team Ortho Ampulete Challenge.

  • Edgar Miranda
Edgar Miranda bikes in the 2004 triathlon.

Edgar joined Team Ortho in 2003, often riding from the Pilot City Clinic in North Minneapolis to Team Ortho's downtown office at lunch time to drop off pledges. For the 2004 triathlon, he formed the Miranda's Miracles relay team, which won first place in their age group. Edgar says:

I was born with something akin to club foot and were it not for modern Orthopaedic science I would have needed a crutch for my whole life. As a teenager I watched as much TV as anyone, couldn't stand the thought that I was missing something interesting...I was missing something potentially interesting, my life.

Then I broke my hand in 1995 and went from swimming in the ocean and riding my bike every day to no physical activity and a 25 lb. weight gain in one year. Then I started water aerobics (I was unable to swim even a length of the pool) and stretching.

The cycling season is under way and my goal is to complete ten 100 mile rides (centuries) this year as well as compete in a few local races in the Masters category, which I can enter now that I turned 35. I will be riding the cycling leg of the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon as part of Team Ortho again this year.

When done as a relay, the triathlon involves only one 'leg' - a 25 mile bike ride or similarly manageable distances for running (or walking) and swimming. I say manageable because you go at your pace. It is interesting and fun to be part of such a big event. You might consider trying it yourself."
